Cynthia D. Kilpatrick

I'm a PhD candidate in Linguistics at UC San Diego. My general interests are centered around phonology and second language acquisition, and I'm especially intrigued by the question of how completely second language learners acquire the phonology of their L2, and how this affects their perception of speech. My dissertation looks specifically at this issue, investigating to what extent second language learners of Spanish and English are able to acquire a phonological subset.

Working in Linguistics

At the moment, I'm busy working on my dissertation, so I'm spending lots of time preparing stimuli and running subjects, as well as trying to finish up a few other projects. In Spring 08, you can generally find me around the Linguistics Department at the following times:

  • Monday 9-5
  • Wednesday 9-5
  • Friday 9:30-10:30 for SaDPhiG
  • possibly Friday afternoons after CHD

...and at the CTD

I work at the UCSD Center for Teaching Development, where I am a language consultant for international graduate students. I also observe and consult with TA's, offer various workshops, and work with the Summer Graduate Teaching Fellows. My CTD hours for Spring 08 are as follows:
